Artist's Description
The seventy five year old Galway Hooker the St Patrick sailed from Ireland in 1986 to America, Skippered by her owner Paddy Barry she was the first Hooker ever to make this voyage. On the 4th of July 1986 she cruised past the Statue of Liberty into New York harbour with a crew of six ordinary boatmen for the west of Ireland. They then went on to sail up along the coast to Baltimore.In 1993 they sailed to the Arctic and Greenland. Orginally a work boat she was used eventually for leisure cruises around Galway Bay and the Aran Islands. She was was lost in a storm off the West Cork coast in May 2002.
