In around 800ad St Brendan the Navigator sailed from Ireland to Canada in a leather and timber boat. His journey has been well recorded and was major feat of endurance at that time. On the bottom right is shown the Boighter Gold boat dating from the same period and now in the National Museum of Ireland.
